If you’re healthy and do not qualify for Obamacare then short term health insurance might be your best option. Short term policies are not regulated under the Affordable Care Act, which means two very important things:
- You could still be penalized the fine for not having qualified coverage
- The monthly rate is much lower, allowing you to afford coverage for the things you actually need – low deductibles, copays, dental.
Short term polices are typically much cheaper than plans regulated under the ACA because short term plans are not required to meet the minimum level of coverage required by the law. That is not to say short term plans have low levels of coverage, they are just not required to provide certain things like free preventative care, maternity coverage or mental health coverage – although some still do.
