It is hard to distinguish one single company as THE BEST health insurance company. Health insurance prices, coverage and networks change on a regional basis and therefore one company may be the best in one part of the country but not offer coverage in other parts.
The list below highlights some of the best and worst qualities of the three leading carriers.
BlueCross BlueShield: Most popular carrier nationwide. BCBS is one of the most recognizable insurance carriers and, in most areas, they offer more ACA regulated plans (Obamacare) than any other carrier. BCBS is notorious for having low rate options and high quality short term coverage options as well. However, recently, BCBS has narrowed their network sizes, therefore drastically limiting the options people have for choosing doctors.
United HealthCare: Has the largest network of doctors and hospital as well as one of the best in-network discounts in the industry. In addition to stellar ACA regulated plans, United also offers some of the best Short Term Medical coverage. While United HealthCare’s short term polices are some of the lowest price plans on the market, UHC’s ACA (Obamacare) plans are typically the most expensive option.
Humana: Has a very strong nationwide network and offer some of the most competitive rates in the industry. Also, Humana has wonderful supplemental options, such as dental, vision, critical illness insurance, life insurance, and cancer insurance. While competitively priced, in most areas the options from Humana are very limited.
All of the grade-A carriers have great coverage, and they all offer plans that focus on different types of coverage. It is often times best to speak with a licensed broker and discuss your insurance needs.
